As plants begin budding, they are often attacked by fungus and can die in a very short time.  Some members spray a rotation of fungicides every couple of weeks from mid-February thru mid-April.  Dr. Mellencamp recommended Physan-20 (1T/gal) for winged elm, crabapple and quince.   Curious if anyone is treating for fungus and what you're using?  If you're rotating then, what is in your rotation?
